Schools Division of Canlaon City runs the extra mile, ensuring that student-athletes participating in the highly anticipated Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVIRAA) Meet 2024 don’t miss out on their education with a Learning Bazaar.
According to Dr. Carmela A. Gelogo, Education Program Supervisor in English, this initiative by the Canlaon City Schools Division is a significant step towards ensuring holistic development for student-athletes. She emphasizes the importance of balance between academics and extracurricular activities while promoting inclusivity by ensuring students who excel in sports competitions are not left behind in academic education. She also mentioned that this demonstrates a creative approach to maintaining learning continuity in non-traditional settings as well.
“[The Learning Bazaar] will really benefit the student-athletes because they will not be missing the competencies not recited due to the practice and the event this week and they will be kept abreast on the target competencies for the quarter specially that our periodical examination is coming.”

Dr. Gelogo, emphasized that the program ensures that athletes are not left behind in their studies despite their busy schedules with practices and games.

Dr. Mario Dejito, Education Program Specialist in TLE, said the Learning Bazaar is intended to provide athletes with educational activities during their free time. They can visit the bazaar to read materials and answer prepared questions in different subjects. Athletes who answer correctly will receive recognition. He also mentioned that the program aims to help athletes retain the lessons they learned in school and emphasize that education continues even while they are competing in the CVIRAA.
The Learning Bazaar offers a multitude of advantages for student athletes. It allows them to continue learning in their spare time despite their busy schedules during their games. “… ang learning bazaar [kay] maka-help namo as athletes nga even though walay ga teach namo, kami mismo kabalo asa mi makat-on and naa gihapon mi ma-learn,” reflected Glaiza P. Saludaquil, a secondary level volleyball player.
The previous year, modules were provided to athletes which they can answer during their free time. This year’s Learning Bazaar is a more comprehensive program that caters to different learning styles. Dr. Gelogo proudly said that the initiative is worthy of emulation by other schools in the region.

The Learning Bazaar is located at the library of Don Vicente Rama Memorial Elementary School. It includes a big TV for the Sineskwela show and trivia games. More information on the program can be secured from Renato Lausa, Sir Gogie Gubaton and Sir Leonardo Legaspi of the Learning Resource Management.
SDO Canlaon’s Learning Bazaar is a shining example of how schools can go the extra mile to support the well-rounded development of their students. By ensuring both academic and athletic success, this program paves the way for a brighter future for these young athletes.
