The evening was filled with joy and celebration, as the principal of DVRMES, Dr. Floreiphine S. Navarro, led the Sinulog Dance Performance alongside the teacher-performers in their striking red Filipiniana attire, mesmerizing the audience with their vibrant energy during the CVIRAA 2024 Welcome Dinner.

The Don Vicente Memorial Elementary School (DVRMES) hosted a festive welcome dinner for the Schools Division of Canlaon delegation, staying at the school’s billeting quarters until May 10th for the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet (CVIRAA) 2024.

The night kicked off with a heartwarming program as Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama himself serenaded the guests with a special rendition of “You’ve Got a Friend,” setting the mood for the evening.

For her welcoming speech, DVRMES Principal, Dr. Floreiphine S. Navarro, addressed the athletes and the delegation.  She expressed her hope that their stay would be restful and that it would allow them to prepare for the upcoming games.  “We see this as an opportunity for you to learn, grow in personal discipline, and most importantly, develop your overall health and well-being,” Dr. Navarro said.  She also emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, stating, “Magsadya kita ug magsaulog sa katahum sa kinabuhi pinaagi sa sports.”

The evening continued with lively performances by the school’s dance troupe and ukulele ensemble, showcasing Cebuanos rich culture and talents.

Following Dr. Navarro’s message, Dr. Nimfa D. Bongo, Schools Division Superintendent of Cebu City, delivered her greetings through Mrs. Celestina D. Gohetia.  Echoing Dr. Navarro’s sentiments, Dr. Bongo declared, “Over the next ten days, our city and DVRMES will be your home away from home. We are committed to making your stay memorable and comfortable.”  She highlighted the efforts of Cebu City’s entire education community in ensuring a smooth experience for the delegation. Dr. Bongo concluded by saying, “Let this meet be a testament to the spirit of unity and the strength of our shared goals in education and sports.”

Representing the City of Canlaon, Hon. Mamerto S. Bermil Jr. expressed his unwavering support for the athletes.  Bermil stated, “We have been supporting our athletes from the very beginning.” He acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the team’s success, saying, “This isn’t possible because of just one official. It’s because of all of us, the people of Canlaon City, and your city officials who have been working together to ensure the athletes from Canlaon Division arrive here without any difficulties.”  Bermil concluded with a motivational message for the athletes: “…maningkamot ta nga makadala ta og dungog og pangalan sa atong siyudad sa Canlaon” (Let’s strive to bring honor and recognition to our city of Canlaon).

As the program was about to end, Atty. Ester A. Futalan, SDO Canlaon Superintendent, expressed her deep appreciation for the warm welcome. “We are truly happy knowing that you welcome us with a cheerful heart,” she said.  She acknowledged the thoughtful billeting arrangements, mentioning the “clean classrooms, clean surroundings, and a place with plenty of shades of trees.” She also commended the school for providing a kitchen with abundant water supply and installing security measures.

Atty. Futalan made a special comparison to last year’s billeting quarters for Palarong Pambansa held in Marikina, saying, “In a way, you are competing with that in terms of providing your delegates with a beautiful and friendly environment.” She particularly appreciated the school’s promptness in providing their needs at any time.

“We are Canlaon, and we are used to hard work. So let us give our best!”
